Hi! My name is larrita Canada. My daughter is three years old and is sceduled to have the veptr surgery on 7-29-2010. Her name is Rihana. She has fused ribs and scolosis and a tethered cord. I am glad she is getting it done, but terrified. what are the chances of something going troublely wrong. We live in virginia. she is having her surgery down by chester sharp from Richmond Va. anyone experience with this doctor. Just curious if they will have all the tubes in stuff off of her before she wakes up after being sedated. Anyone with information on what to expect during this surgery please give input.

Hello. Has Larrita had her tethered spinal cord released yet? Most surgeons do not want to combine those two surgeries. My son Carter had to have his cord released a few months ago. He has been walking and crawling, and even running around but after the surgery, the surgeon said that his cord was so tight that it flung up into the spinal canal and that the surgery was definitely needed because as he grows, it could have become tighter.
Carter has not had the surgery yet, but there are a ton of people here with children who have had it done. He should be having his in October in PA.
We are going to bring a few things from home so that Carter will feel more comfortable, like a blanket, a stuffed animal, and a pillow cover. A friend of mine brought a picture of her and her husband and taped it to the end of the crib so that her baby could see it when she woke up. I think that's a great idea too.
Sorry I can't speak to the condition of our children after the surgery, but I do know that it varies greatly from child to child. My friend's daughter was off oxygen after surgery and then needed a bipap for several days. I think it all depends on the child.
Best of luck.

They said they were going to do it all at once because it is just a little piece that is stuck fat inside her. She has like 7 doctors that are going to be in there while the surgery is going on.

Thank you. She is in surgery right now as we speak. I've necer been so scared in my life, But she has to have it or it could cause more problems then wat she has. So far only a tethered cord and fused ribs. Don't want her lungs and heart to give her problems later. keep you updated.

Surgery went very well. Now we are working on the recovery period. she has to lay in bed sedated for three days cause of having her spinal cord untethered but other than that she is doing great. It seems now its over i was worried for nothing. Rihana had a really good team of doctors and i am very greatful. Now all we have to look for is the expansion surgeries and they should go along smoot. I hope. Thanks for everyones prayers. This site really helped me. I was a nervous reck until I read the stories on this site and did a little research. I'm so glad that they have sites like this. thank you to all and I hope everyone surgery and stuff goes just a smooth. Thank you so much.
