thanks for your quick response. i hope that they somehow over looked her other kidney too. i hear that people survive on one kidney, but 2 is always better than one. so where are you located? has your son done the veptr rods also?

Hi there,

Alex only has one kidney (and thus only one adrenal gland). His single kidney is fully functional and we've never had any problems. However; we are very vigilant when he is on meds -- about making sure the docs & pharmacists are VERY AWARE of his single kidney -- as many drugs used for extended periods or in highs doses -- are "nephrotoxic" -- such as some antibiotics...

Welcome, Noah has only one kidney and like Wendy we are vigilant about nephrotoxic drugs. I do let him have motrin after surgery, but keep track closely of how much he's had and ask that his antibiotics aren't nephrotoxic. Noah will be 3 in 3 weeks and had his implant in SA in Nov.

have the docotrs said anything about odds of needing a transplant years later? so the medications that he takes during the surgery dont affect him too much i take it? what about diet? is there a certain diet that he is on? we see a doctor about this in a few weeks. thank you for getting back to me.

Just wanted to ditto what the others have said.  Having only one kidney is very manageable.  My Braydon has 2, but they are fused together and one only functions at 30%.  I hope Avery has a nephrologist who he sees regularly (annually, unless there are problems) and that his ped is well aware of the fact there is only one kidney.  They should keep an eye on his blood pressure (high blood pressure is a sign his kidney is in danger) and he should have routine blood work as often or as rarely as the nephrologist suggests.  When he has surgery of any kind, the hospital should be well aware of his renal status.  They should know how to adjust medications to keep that kidney healthy and strong.  Once you get an emotional handle on this, you'll become the expert.  You'll do great, I promise.

ZOE HAS JUST ONE KIDNEY AS WELL...
BUT FOR ZOE, SHE ALSO HAS A BLADDER REFLUX, AND NEEDED
A VESICOSTOMY WHEN SHE WAS JUST 6 MONTHS OLD...
9 AND 1/2 YEARS LATTER, AND ZOE IS DOING VERY WELL...
HER ONE KIDNEU IS HEALTHY AND NORMAL, AND HAS NEVER TRULY BEEN AN ISSUE...
AS OTHERS HERE HAVE MENTIONED, IT IS SOMETHING YOU ALWAYS NEED TO MAKE TREATING
PHYSICANS AWARE OF...EXTREMELY IMPORTANT...
ALSO ZOE HAS TAKEN BACTRIM, EVERY DAY NOW SINCE BIRTH, AS A PRECAUTION FOR INFECTION...
ALL THE BEST TO YOU...
AND THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING WITH US, AND WE LOOK FORWARD TO HEARING MORE ABOUT YOUR SON...

GOD BLESS...

We don't do anything special for his diet. Except let him eat whatever he will eat. He very skinny like most kids here. I don't think the meds given during surgery affect the kidney much, they are excreted more through the liver. After surgery they do check labs, kidney function being one of them. You want to watch the creatinine and BUN and the osmolality. I always ask the nurses to tell me any abnormal labs so I can ask the docs when they round. If Avery's one kidney functions normally there really isn't a lot you need to do except see the specialist and make sure all docs are aware. Keep us posted.

While I have no personal experience with VEPTR, my father found out at the ripe old age of 75 that he had only one kidney. What a surprise it was! He lived all his life not knowing. (Thankfully, he is still with us, turning 77 next week).

My point is dad takes lots of meds, as most seniors do, for memory, high blood pressure, cholesterol, etc. He also had triple bypass surgery about 7 years ago, as well as hernia surgery about 4 years ago.

At the time they found out about the single kidney, the doctor told us that one kidney that is healthy and working well is better than having two kidneys but having issues with one, because it usually later affects the other.

I realize that some of your children have other medical conditions as well, but I just wanted to offer optimism that a single kidney, in and of itself, shouldn't cause any problems.

Good luck to all.

Another comfort: My 44 year old husband recently discovered he had only one kidney. He has no ill-effects from it, but is monitored.
